For Print ready version CLICK HERE
This recipe uses firm tofu sliced into strips, grilled or sauteed and baked in a casserole with
a sauce much like that used in our Baked Bean Casserole..  The result is a tofu dish that
meat eaters will enjoy and kids will ask for again.  Great on buns and easily portable for
picnics or parties.
Ingredients
1 Pkg. firm tofu
1 cup of  ketchup
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup molasses
¼ cup finely chopped onions (or more to
taste)
Dash of garlic salt
Dash of pepper
Herb seasoning to taste
Olive oil or cooking oil for grill or pan
Preparation
Slice firm tofu into strips about ½ inch
wide and ¼ inch thick.  If cooking on
outdoor grill, place aluminum foil under
strips, if cooking on  stove top, lightly oil
fry pan or grill and cook strips turning
once until golden brown.  Do not
overcook or char, strips should be firm
but not tough.  Lightly season with herb
seasoning, salt or pepper as preferred,
before and after turning.
Remove strips from heat.
In medium size casserole or baking
dish, mix ketchup, brown sugar,
molasses, onions, dash of  herb
seasoning and garlic salt or pepper to
taste.  Stir well.
Place tofu strips in casserole and coat
with sauce.
Bake in 350 degree oven for 20-30
minutes, until sauce bubbles and
thickens.
Remove from oven, let stand briefly to
thicken sauce.  Serves 4-6.  Leftovers
make great sandwiches.
